Camilo Weinberger has been part of our Optoelectronics Lab since 2019. He was a member of the first cohort of the PhD program at the School of Electrical Engineering (EIE) at PUCV and is the second to obtain his degree from Optolab.
On Tuesday, July 30, Camilo defended his thesis titled Deep Learning Wavefront Sensing for Extremely Large Telescopes, explaining the research he developed over his four years of doctoral study, including his time interning at the Laboratory of Astrophysics of Marseille (LAM).
His research and publications during this period focused on using neural networks to enhance adaptive optics systems for Extremely Large Telescopes, giant telescopes that will be installed in the north of our country. The article titled Transformer Neural Networks for Closed-Loop Adaptive Optics Using Non-Modulated Pyramid Wavefront Sensors was, as he noted, the “backbone of his doctoral work.”
Camilo joined Optolab after completing his undergraduate and master’s degrees in Physics, introducing adaptive optics as a research topic in our lab. He is a member of the first generation of the PhD program in Electrical Engineering at the School of Electrical Engineering at PUCV.
The examination committee was composed of Dr. Benoit Neichel from LAM, who traveled from France to participate in Camilo’s defense, along with Dr. Nelly Cerpa, a postdoc from the University of Los Andes, and Dr. Darío Pérez from the Institute of Physics at PUCV.
Also present were Mauricio Rodríguez, the director of the PhD program, Esteban Vera, director of Optolab and Camilo’s advisor, along with his family and lab colleagues.
With the highest possible grade, of 7.0, for his defense and presentation, Camilo Weinberger is the newest member of Optolab to receive the title of PhD in Electrical Engineering from PUCV.
Congratulations to Dr. Camilo Weinberger for his outstanding presentation and excellent thesis defense, where he answered his committee’s questions brilliantly.
We wish you all the best for your future endeavors! We are confident that you will have a very successful professional career.
