Camilo Weinberger, student of the Ph.D in Electrical Engineering program of the PUCV’s School of Electrical Engineering, and optoelectronics lab assistant, was part during mid-december of the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation, which is organized by the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
This presentation was titled Improved training for the deep learning wavefront sensor, and was developed by Dr. Esteban Vera, head of the optoelectronics lab, and Felipe Guzmán, who is also a Ph.D. student and assistant for the lab. This event, is considered to be the most important among those who cover instrumentation as a research field, and is held every two years. In this ocassion, the inscription was free and the participants had the opportunity to have plenty of space in such discussion topics such as adaptive optics, space telescopes, infrared, X rays, astronomy for simulations, telecommunication technologies, satellites, among others. The activity was held from December 14th – 18th.
“I presented what we have been doing with Prof. Vera, which is the detection of Zernike modes into the phase, analyzing images through a camera. What we have is a camera that is out of focus subtlety, and, with the using of a neuronal network trained previously, we’re interested in see the deformations that come inside the camera, let’s say, if we are seeing a start or even a guide star”, said the physicist.
Weinberger commented also that had the opportunity to show the base idea of this proposal on a previous event, in that case, organized by the Optical Society of America -OSA-. “In this particular event, the SPIE, our focus was the comparison of various simulations, something that Prof. Vera also deeply developed on a seminar presentation”, added our assistant. He also, highlighted the online management of the activity, where the participants were able to, through the use of the virtual work environment platform Slack, see and made questions to the presentors.
2021 and beyond
Our Ph.D student emphasized on the good results that the lab has been receiving on all the investigation that has been made during the last few months, in spite of the COVID-19 impossed restrictions when it comes to telecommuting, concluding that by now, is expected the development of a new article and also another participation in some activity of the same regard.
