On August 11th we received visitors in our lab in the context of the Open Day of PUCV. Most of them were senior-year students who are interested in choosing to study a career in our School of Electrical Engineering.
This is an activity that happens every year in Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso and it’s really important because it can make an impact on the professional future of the students that attend.
On this occasion our team prepared experiments and demonstrations to teach in a practical way what we’ve been investigating in Optolab, showing everyone a different and very fun path that can be followed when studying Electronic or Electrical Engineering.
We explain in a very basic way what the study of light is about and also go a little in-depth explaining Adaptive Optics and what it allows us to do in this field, showing them with a smoke machine how atmospheric turbulence affects the travel of light, by using lasers that cross the ceiling of the lab. And also show a transmission in real time of the event and thermic cameras.
We relate it all to how this could be applied to track down space debris, for communications through lasers, or even in the Extremely Large Telescopes that will be installed in our country by 2030.
We thank everyone in our team who was involved in the preparation of this event, they all worked very hard on getting everything ready and it turned out really great. The visitors got the chance to learn and ask questions while having fun.
