Nelson Díaz, a postdoctoral researcher at Optolab, will be in Colombia from October 2023 until December 15th, conducting a research internship at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS).
Dr. Díaz is specifically working with the group in algorithm design and multidimensional data processing (HDSP) at the university located in the city of Bucaramanga.
For the past 3 months, he has been working with the team led by Dr. Henry Argüello. The group’s research areas include multispectral imaging in the compressed domain, algorithm design, and processing large volumes of data in high dimensions.
“During the internship, we have been exploring cooperation projects in the areas of depth sampling through uniform sampling techniques,” comments Dr. Díaz.
Additionally, the internship provided him with the opportunity to present his recent article published in the IEEE Transactions on Image Processing titled “Multispectral Filter Array Design by Optimal Sphere Packing” at the research group seminar, which serves as the basis for his ongoing research at UIS.
How has your experience been?
The experience in Colombia has been very rewarding because I have been able to interact with a large group of people working on topics related to the application of artificial intelligence to computational optics. Currently, I am continuing to work on a research topic, where I am extending my multispectral filter design based on sphere packing applied to the design of diffractive lenses. This research enables the construction of more compact and safer cameras.
Would you recommend someone to do an internship at this institution?
I recommend the academic community at PUCV to visit the Industrial University of Santander in Bucaramanga, Colombia, as it is a spacious and welcoming campus. Additionally, through my experience in the group in algorithm design and multidimensional data processing, I have been able to expand my knowledge and work on a new line of research, such as the design of diffractive lenses.
Upon returning from the internship, the researcher will share more about the projects he is developing alongside Bastián Romero, a master’s student and member of Optolab, who is also doing an internship at UIS. We hope that the collaborative work is proving to be very fruitful.
