Dr. Esteban Vera delivered a keynote lecture, and the team also participated in the conference, showcasing 7 experiments and 5 telescopes to the Santo Domingo community.
We attended the 2023 International Congress of Amateur Astronomy organized by the Science Park Foundation in Santo Domingo, which took place from November 8 to 11.
Dr. Vera’s Presentation
Our director and professor at the School of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Esteban Vera, was invited to give a lecture on the first day of the event titled “Cleaning the Sky with Adaptive Optics,” where he explained the work carried out at Optolab.
He began by contextualizing the advantages of the sky in our country for astronomical observation, presenting the optical telescopes currently in operation on Chilean soil and those slated for installation in the coming years, such as the ESO’s ELT, which is already under construction.
Adding that the connection to the work carried out at Optolab involves the creation of technology that can be applied to these telescopes.
He also explained the various projects we are developing. These extend beyond astronomy, addressing topics such as satellite tracking or observation, space debris, and satellite communication using Adaptive Optics systems, among others.
The lecture concluded with a Q&A session and the professor signing a couple of autographs.
Experiment Booth
At the Optolab booth, which remained set up throughout the 3-day conference, we showcased, through 7 experiments and 5 telescopes, the foundations of the research conducted at the Optoelectronics Laboratory of PUCV.
Students, enthusiasts, experts, educators, and communicators of all ages approached our booth to inquire about the demonstrations, showing great interest and eagerness to learn.
We express our gratitude to the Science Park Foundation for inviting us to this Congress. Activities like these enable us to continue our mission of disseminating science to the younger generations and communities within the Valparaíso region.
