Professor Esteban Vera Serves as Associate Editor in Prestigious Scientific Journals

He currently serves on the editorial boards of three high-level scientific journals, strengthening the international visibility of the research carried out at the PUCV.

Dr. Esteban Vera, academic of the Escuela de Ingeniería Eléctrica PUCV and head of the Laboratorio de Optoelectrónica, was invited to serve as Associate Editor for three globally recognized scientific journals. These ad honorem positions acknowledge and consolidate his extensive trajectory in optics, information processing, and imaging systems.

In the first semester of 2025, Professor Vera renewed his second term as Associate Editor for Optics Express of the Optica group and for the IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing. Likewise, he recently received a formal invitation to join the editorial board of IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging.

Giving Back to the Scientific Community

Those who take on these responsibilities are experienced researchers whose work focuses on coordinating analysis processes, selecting reviewers, and assessing the originality and rigor of the manuscripts received.

On this matter, Dr. Vera notes that this work entails a high level of responsibility and thoroughness:

“It is a recognition that one takes things seriously and works with dedication, because this is a service to society—it is not remunerated. When I first began publishing, someone took the time to ensure our accepted papers were of high quality, and now it’s my turn to do the same.”

Latin American Leadership: Continuity and New Opportunities

Due to Professor Vera’s outstanding performance at Optics Express, in 2025 he was invited to extend his term for an additional three years, becoming the first and only Latin American scientist to be part of its editorial panel. The journal stands out for its strong international positioning within the scientific community and because it has been the first open-access publication in the field of optics since its creation in 1997.

One month later, he also accepted the opportunity to prolong his term at the IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing, a publication dedicated to disseminating research on technologies that enable the generation, transformation, and interpretation of information across multiple signal-processing formats.

After fifteen years of experience as a reviewer—and following two previous editorial renewals—Esteban Vera assumed a third position in one of the most influential journals in computational imaging: IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging, which holds an impact factor of 4.8 and a Q1 ranking.

This appointment is particularly meaningful for our institution, as the journal’s scope directly aligns with the research areas developed at Optolab PUCV, spanning from fundamental theoretical methods to the most innovative designs in computational imaging systems.

In this context, Professor Vera explains:

“These appointments benefit the University because they show that we have academics recognized by the international scientific community. The name of the PUCV appears alongside leading institutions worldwide.”

These roles also help foster new academic collaborations:

“Serving as an editor opens doors: more people learn about our work, and new invitations for collaborations and talks begin to arrive. It is a very valuable platform to showcase that important research is being done here.”

Through his participation in these editorial committees and the solid reputation he has built as a reviewer, editor and academic, Dr. Esteban Vera continues to strengthen the international presence of the PUCV and the Escuela de Ingeniería Eléctrica, positioning Optolab as a regional reference in optics, signal processing, and the development of cutting-edge computational imaging systems.
